Venice needs to be experienced as much as possible from the water, because many facets of its spirit lie in the middle of its lagoon, and thus help to complete the portrait of this most unique city. Its islands for example house many secrets of its history and traditions which cannot be found simply from books. These places have their own individual flavour: to be surrounded by water and discover there characteristics is a delight for the senses, an immersion into the natural ambience which contains the city and which represents a great part of the magic of Venice. This tour allows you to embrace the natural environment and the best of the local handicrafts, and offers an unmissable experience. It also permits you to reach the spiritual side of the area, preserved intact and still alive in the rhythms of life of the islands.
We embark on our private boat and immediately meet the island of San Giorgio, once known as the ‘island of cypresses’ owing to the large number of these trees. History relates that in 982 it was given by the Venetian Republic to Giovanni Morosini, who founded a Benedictine monastery which soon became renowned throughout Europe. Breathing in its atmosphere is an almost tactile experience.
To our left we can see the Arsenale, where the merchant ships and powerful military fleet were built. Through these Venice accrued its enormous riches throughout the centuries. At its height it employed more than 16,000 men on construction. According to tradition it was built in 1104 and grew constantly until the 17th century.
From here we pass on to Murano, world-famous for its glass. During the 1500s many noblemen built sumptuous villas here, and obtained special privileges from the Republic for the glass manufacturing activities. To give a flavour of this we will visit one of the important glass factories and witness a demonstration of how the glass is made.
We continue on to Burano, another of the marvels of Venetian industry and ingenuity. The particular atmosphere here derives from the uniqueness of the island, from the intimate connection with the natural lagoon setting and the local inhabitants, and from the brightly-painted characteristic houses with their narrow entrances leading directly on to the flowing waters of the canals. The island is famous for its delicate lace. To learn more of the manufacture and history of this we will visit a lace-making school and workshop.
On completion of our visit we return to Saint Mark’s.
