With this fascinating tour in Venice on foot you will enjoy a relaxing walk along the magical itineraries concealed between the many alleyways of Venice and visit two of the best-known buildings in Venice: the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Cathedral.

The tour will start in St Mark’s Square, where you will hear a description of the most important buildings overlooking the square, and continue towards Campo of Santa Maria Formosa. Here you will be told intriguing anecdotes and learn the history of the splendid Church of Santa Maria Formosa and the homonym square, surrounded by several palaces of historic and architectural relevance.

The next stop of the tour will be in another famous square of Venice: Campo Santi Giovanni and Paolo where you will admire the equestrian monument dedicated to Bartolomeo Colleoni and the imposing Church of Santi Giovanni and Paolo and the Schools of Carità.

After visiting the place where Marco Polo’s house once stood, you will admire the outside of the celebrated Malibran Theatre.

The tour will return to St Mark’s Square through the coloured Venice Mercerie - the renowned haberdasheries located between Rialto and St Mark’s Square.

Thanks to this tour you will have the opportunity to visit the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Cathedral, located in the picturesque setting of St Mark’s square. Considered one the symbols of Venice, the Doge’s Palace was the centre of the Venice Republic from the beginning to the end and today houses the Doge’s Palace Civic Museum.

Thought to have been initiated in the 9th century, it was only in 1340 that a radical overhaul was undertaken transforming the Doge’s Palace into its present day appearance: a masterpiece of the Venetian Gothic, the Doge’s Palace was the residence of the Doge and the Venice courts.

Besides the splendid interiors, decorated with hundreds of magnificent paintings, the visit of the Doge’s Palace in Venice includes the celebrated Bridge of Sighs that used to connect the Doge’s Palace with the prisons, whose name comes from the last breath that convicts would release before their execution: a convict at the time of the Venice Republic could not be granted amnesty.

The last stage of the tour will be the splendid St Mark’s Cathedral, the main monument in St Mark’s Square and that derives its name from the Church itself. The first edifice of St Mark’s Cathedral probably dates back to 828 and was built with the purpose of housing the relics of Saint Mark stolen by two Venetian merchants from Alexandria of Egypt. Originally the palatine church of the Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s Cathedral retained this function until the fall of the Venice Republic and has only been the city’s cathedral since 1807.

During the tour you will admire the marvellous mosaics of St Mark’s Cathedral - you will hear a description of their history, characteristics and of the Bible episodes represented in them - as well as the precious Golden Pall and the Treasure of St Mark’s Cathedral.
