With this tour you will discover a more intimate and traditional Venice by visiting the most characteristic and genuine islands of Venice: Murano, Burano and Torcello.
Immersed in the lagoon, north of the historic centre, are the three major islands of Venice: Murano, famous throughout the world for its glass making; Burano, known for its characteristic colourful houses and lace making; and Torcello the oldest and most mysteriousof the islands of the Venice lagoon.
The historic customs and practices of the inhabitants of Venice, their best arts and crafts and the oldest traditions of Venice itself reside in these islands.
Away from the chaos and the hordes of tourists that flock to Venice every day, Murano, Burano and Torcello have a more peaceful atmosphere, suited to contemplation and heightened by the colours, tranquility and sounds of nature.
The first stop of this tour will be Murano, one of the most densely populated islands of the Venice lagoon and the home of glass making. In the time-honoured glass factories in Murano you will see splendid objects being made, true art masterpieces that are more than just arts and crafts. When buying something here you will be certain of owning an original piece and not one of the many fakes that are sold in Venice itself.
The tour will then continue to Burano, the second stop along the fascinating sites of the Venice lagoon. Known for its typical bright and multicoloured houses, it is also noteworthy for its handmade laces, a century-long tradition that has made this island famous around the world. In the shops and stalls of Burano you will be able to purchase these minute lace masterpieces, and like Murano you will be certain of buying an original and unique piece. Burano is also the homeplace of Baldassare Galuppi, renowned composer and organ player of the 18th century.
The last stop of the tour will be Torcello, the perfect meeting place between history and spirituality.
Already inhabited during Roman times, Torcello was the most important centre of the Venice lagoon until a plague and expanding swamps forced its inhabitants to find shelter in Venice.
In Torcello you can admire traces of its glorious past, such as the Torcello Basilica, the Church of Santa Fosca, the legendary Attilas’s throne and the mysterious Devil’s Bridge and enjoy a walk in peace and tranquillity through the island's untouched nature.
