14th International Architecture Exhibition

From 07 June 2014 to 23 November 2014

The Biennale in Venice 2014 dates are from 7 June to 23 November. This year Venice will host the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, Fundamentals. The historic venues in the Biennale Gardens and the Arsenal, as well as the many attractions of the historic centre are preparing to welcome the innovations of the Architecture Biennale in Venice in 2014!

The Biennale di Venezia 2014 will offer greater autonomy to the national pavilions, past, present and future of architecture and the various activities will not only run alongside the main exhibition, but they will also constitute a further enrichment.

After the numerous editions which have been dedicated to the contemporary period, there will be three ambitious complementary sections - Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014, Elements of Architecture and Monditalia - which open the International Architecture Exhibition la Biennale di Venezia to history, not to mention the current state of architecture and the prospects for its future.

The direction of the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale is entrusted to one of the most discussed and influential personalities of contemporary architecture, Rem Koolhaas at the Venice Biennale 2014: the Dutch architect, urban planner and author. Rem Koolhaas at the Biennale in Venice has given life to a real project research on architecture, involving the whole reality of the Biennale and enhancing its potential.

First the big news of the 14th Biennale of Architecture in Venice 2014 regarding the national pavilions: with Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014 their contributions become more free and customizable than previous editions of the Biennale, when they had to submit to the general theme adopted by the curator for 'their' show. Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014 wants to invite the national pavilions to abandon the individual national characteristics to adopt a universal language and a set of uniform types: Venice, the Biennale Fundamentals opens the way to a rich, complex and stimulating comparison between different cultures techniques and inventions peculiar to each country.

In the Main Pavilion, Elements of Architecture retraces the fundamental elements of each building, used in the past as in the present worldwide: walls, windows, ceilings, roofs, floors, doors, balconies, corridors, facades, fireplaces, stairs, ramps and lifts. The 14th Architecture Biennale Exhibition in Venice covers the last 100 years and the latest developments of the main points of reference in the relationship between civilization and architecture.

A unified theme - Italy - for the section Monditalia at the Corderie Arsenale: exhibitions, theatres performances and events devoted to some aspects of Italy that will include in the Italian International Exhibition of Architecture at the Biennale in Venice in 2014 the other sectors of the Venice Biennale - Dance, Music, Theatre and Cinema - to present the complexity of a society, as well as others in the world, which is a reference and a source of inspiration for architecture.

Biennale di Architettura Venezia 2014 also offers:

Biennale Sessions, now in its 5th edition, the project facilitates visits to the exhibition for groups of students and teachers who are assisted in the organization of the journey and the stay;

Meetings on Architecture, enriched by the project Weekend Specials, offers workshops, lectures, debates and performances throughout the duration of the Biennale in Venice 2014 exhibitions of Architecture.

The Venice Biennale Architecture in the Pavilions of the Arsenale and in the beautiful historical centre will host 65 national participations. Of these, 11 countries - Azerbaijan, Côte d'Ivoire, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, New Zealand and Turkey - will make their first appearance at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice.

For the Venice Biennale 2014 of Architecture the Italian Pavilion at the Arsenale, organized by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture in collaboration with the PaBAAC, will be furnished by the famous Milanese architect Cino Zucchi, who in the last edition of the Biennale received special mention from the jury.
