To avoid unnecessary bloodshed, the mayor proposed an alternative solution to the contenders: the two had to demonstrate their abilities in a big live chess game in Marostica, Italy. The winner would then be able to marry Lionora, and the loser could marry her younger sister.

 

The exciting Marostica living chess game was held in the square of the castle, in the presence of the nobility and inhabitants. The living chess match was played with real people instead of tokens used in a classical chess tournament. Marostica, for the occasion, organized a big party with music, dancing, lights and shows of infantry, knights and men-in-arms, which have remained throughout history.

 

For over fifty years, the living chess festival in Marostica, is one of the most important events, a unique opportunity to discover the customs and traditions of an era long forgotten by re-enacting the fascinating living chess game in Italy held in 1400s.
