Before becoming the main festival of diversity of the Veneto, Operaestate started life as an exclusively opera-oriented festival at Bassano del Grappa (VI). The theatre section is divided into two parts: Vox Populi which presents LItalia s desta with Ottavia Piccolo (17/7 an abridged and corrected version of Hamlet Amleto Il popolo non ha il pane? (Diamogli le brioche) with Filippo Timi (6/9) andDora in poi (Come sarebbe se fosse diverso) with Paolo Rossi. Also are Biografie (11e12/8) and Paola Curini on the mysterious art of Giorgione (22/8).

The dance section revolves around all styles and epochs. Emio Greco with his Rocco e i suoi fratelli (12/7 the Japanese Yoshifumi Inao (15 e16/7) and theChina of Shen Wei (26/7). The music programme includes the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Veneto with guitarist Alberto Mesirca in Nocturnal (18/8) and the lOrchestra of Venices La Fenice (19/7). Veneto Jazz Festival includes Hiromi Quartet (15/7) and Adam Holzman Synth Solo (21/7). Finally opera lovers get a treat with Franz Lehars The Merry Widow (23 and 25/10) and Il Trovatore of Giuseppe Verdi (20 and 22/12) with musical direction by Omer Welber and theatrical by Denis Krief.

This is only a taste of the richness of Operaestate 2009, however, with its myriad events of cinema, dance, theatre, all taking place from 25 August al 5 September.
