Venice Marathon 2013

27 October 2013

On Sunday 27 October there will be the 28th edition of the Venice Marathon 2013: a globally recognized race at the International certified IAAF Silver Label level.

Recognised as one of the great sports events in Venice, Italy the Venice Marathon in October 2013 has the traditional distance of 42.195 kilometres between the beautiful Riviera del Brenta and the endless charm of Venice.

The Venice Marathon course is the same, passing by: stately homes of the past, nature and cities along the entire route giving the athletes an exciting and very impressive race.

Since its first edition, in 1986, the Venice Marathon offers a unique and highly appreciated route by both the athletes and the wider public who, year after year, urge the runners along the sides of the race. The start of the Venice Marathon in October is scheduled for the fourth Sunday! For athletes who will compete in the Venice Marathon 2013 route is a very flat and smooth route, except for some small uphill stretches between the 25th and the 35th km. In Venice, the marathon participants will face a portion of the path paved with large stone slabs (the 'paving stones') before the last 100 m in pav. In order to ensure a safer and easier race the 14 bridges of the Venice marathon in the historical centre will be equipped with wooden ramps whilst the part of the Stra Venice marathon will be completely closed to traffic.

The Venice marathon in Italy departs from Stra, next to the majestic Villa Pisani, follows along the splendid Venetian villas overlooking the Brenta Canal and then heads to Marghera and Mestre. After a stretch in San Giuliano Park, the largest green area overlooking the lagoon of Venice, the athletes of the 28th Venice Marathon will cross the Liberty Bridge - about 4 km straight - to arrive in Venice.

No change for the route of the marathon of Venice in the centre: a short stretch in the port area will take athletes along the Giudecca Canal to Punta della Dogana where the usual floating bridge on the Grand Canal will lead them to St Marks Square, before the last stretch along the beautiful Riva degli Schiavoni.

The Venice marathon village is set in Riva Sette Martyrs, close to the Biennale Gardens. Along the entire path of the Venice, Italy Marathon 2013 refreshment points and transportation services to accompany struggling athletes to the first aid stations will be provided.

As always, there will be also many side events at the Venice Marathon: 'Family Run' will involve all ages in the two races that are not competitive; 'Anima la Maratona' will organize numerous points of musical entertainment along the route while the Venice Marathon Village in San Giuliano Park provides entertainment, industry news and meetings during the three days of Exposport - Sport and Leisure Fair.

And do not forget the many charities supported by the Venice Marathon runners world that will help the Telethon Walk of Life, Alex Zanardis Bimbi in Gamba, Run for Water and Run for Life by Africa Mission - Development Cooperation.
