IMPORTANT NOTICE

The tour returns to normal availability starting from January 2, 2017. Until December 31, 2016 this tour is suspended because the access to St. Mark’s Baptistery and the Zen Chapel is reserved to pilgrims for the Jubilee.

As an alternative, until December 31, 2016, we offer you St. Mark's Basilica and the Cloister of St. Apollonia, a very similar tour with skip-the-line entry, guided visit of the Basilica, the Treasury, the Golden Pall and the Cloister of St. Apollonia.

Why choose this experience?

1 To enjoy a fascinating St Mark’s Basilica in Venice tour with skip-the-line access: the Basilica will open for you its ancient doors and reveal the secrets kept inside...
2 For the intimate and charming atmosphere, guaranteed by a very small number of participants.
3 Because it offers multiple daily departures in different languages and includes the visit to the Pala d'Oro and St Mark's Basilica treasures.

Please note:

  • monolingual tour in Italian, English or French;
  • the skip-the-line access to St. Mark's Basilica is included in the tour;
  • max 25 participants per group.

An original St Mark's Venice tour to discover the most famous works of art of the Basilica in an exclusive guided visit of the religious symbol building of Venice! Thanks to the small number of participants expected from our guided tour of San Marco in Venice, you can enjoy an intimate and relaxed atmosphere... Take your time to admire the masterpieces preserved within this century-old building and enjoy the experience of our guides to learn about all the details of this extraordinary cathedral!

You will enjoy the convenient skip-the-line service, included in the reservation of our San Marco Venice visit, to enter the building and avoid the long waiting times usually expected at the entrance of St. Mark's Basilica: the guide will lead you along an exclusive itinerary to discover the magnificent treasures of St. Mark's Cathedral ...

St Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures will make you feel privileged from the beginning of our St Mark's Basilica tour: seated at the centre of the Basilica, you will listen to the thousand-year history of the building, the stages of its construction and its rise from a simple church for the Dog's Palace to Venice cathedral.

After the historical introduction of St Mark's Basilica in Venice, the tour will continue with a visit to St Mark's Baptistery and the Zen Chapel in Venice, two little-known beautiful places…

St Mark's Baptistery in Venice is decorated with fourteenth-century mosaics depicting stories of the Baptist and childhood of Christ; at the centre of the baptistery you can admire the beautiful baptismal font and the tombstone of Jacopo Sansovino, and one of the finest examples of Gothic sculpture in Venice: the tomb of Andrea Dandolo.

The itinerary of the tour of St. Mark's Cathedral and its treasures will then continue with a visit to the Zen Chapel in Venice. Converted into a chapel in honour of Cardinal Zen, this place is the old entrance to the Basilica on the pier side. Although the Zen Chapel in St Mark's Cathedral is a splendid example of Renaissance art, the mosaics inside date back to the previous monumental entrance of the church.

Our exclusive visit to St Mark's Basilica treasury, generally not included in the regular guided St. Mark's basilica tours, will be the next stop on our itinerary. St Mark's Venice treasury is housed in a tower, in two rooms that are the only remains of the first Doge's Palace in Venice. In the right room you can admire magnificent liturgical objects, while the left room houses the extensive collection of the relics of St. Mark's Basilica: the guide will pay special attention to the most relevant objects from the artistic and religious point of view.

The Treasury of the Basilica consists of 283 pieces, among which there are Byzantine and Islamic art objects, arrived in Venice after the sack of Constantinople, gifts and acquisitions of the church over the centuries.

After admiring the Treasury, our St Mark's Basilica guided tour will continue in the direction of the high altar, to admire the splendid twelfth century columns that support the alabaster ciborium under which St. Mark relics are kept…

The last part of the tour, the visit to the Pala d'Oro, is undoubtedly one of the most exciting moments of our tour of St Mark's Basilica in Venice: the Pala d'Oro is one of the greatest treasures of St. Mark's Basilica, and is considered one of the most valuable objects in the world. The Golden Pall is made up of silver gilded leaves and decorated with enamels, made with the technique of émail cloisonné, and precious stones. It was completed in 1345 by the great goldsmith master Buoninsegna. St. Mark's Pala d'Oro is the backdrop to the altar of St Mark's Basilica, but is not always visible! In fact, it is rotated to the public only on the occasion of the major liturgical celebrations, thanks to a special device.

St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures: a tour to visit St Mark's Basilica as real protagonists, accompanied by an expert guide, that will tell the story and reveal to you all the secrets of the most important religious building of the Venice Republic.

Book now and treat yourself to an unforgettable experience to discover St. Mark's Cathedral and its treasures! The price displayed is inclusive of the skip-the-line entry, admission tickets to the Pala d'Oro and the Treasury, and guided Basilica di San Marco in Venice tour.

St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures (Skip The Line Guided Tour)

the guide was very good, well informed and capable to place the events in a larger historical context. It was not possible to skip the line because of the security measerements. The guard was unwilling to show us where to go and tried to bluff us away. We were "saved"by the guide who saw things happening.

Reply by venetoinside.com Staff

Dear nn,

we are sorry you could not benefit from the skip-the-line access but pleased everything went right thanks to our guide. Unfortunately the Basilica security staff, of whom we are not directly in charge, do not know all the tours of the basilica and therefore sometimes cannot help customers who are looking for the correct meeting point. We do our best in providing accurate details on the voucher in order to make sure that our customers can locate the meeting point in complete autonomy and without any inconvenience.

Best regards,

'Excellent tour'

Tour
St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures (Skip The Line Guided Tour)

Celine was our guide and gave us so much great info during our tour about the construction and history of the basilica as well as some of the artwork and other treasures. Instead of just walking through the basilica, as many tourists seemed to do, we were able to visit, and learn about, several areas of the basilica including the treasury and main altar. After spending the majority of our time in the basilica, we visited the cloister, a very peaceful spot, but not too interesting.

Dear Marianne,

we are pleased you apprecied the visit of St. Mark’s Basilica but sorry you didn’t find the cloister interesting. As you said, it is a very peaceful place… We have included the cloister in the tour to let our customers breathe a different atmosphere and enjoy precious moments of tranquillity after the visit of St. Mark’s Basilica.

St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures (Skip The Line Guided Tour)

Interesting but I found a lot of the information too deep & required deeper understanding of the historical periods of Venice to fully understand the guide's talk. The tour didn't include admission to the upper gallery or views from the outdoor balcony so we had to pay for this like everyone else.

Dear 30louconcerts,

we are sorry you were not completely satisfied with our tour. Please consider that our guides use the time at their disposal to provide as much information as they can… We regret this was not enough for you! As for the ticket for St. Mark’s Museum, please consider that it is not included in this tour but in another tour we offer, called St Mark's Museum and Cathedral from above (Skip The Line Guided Tour).

'Worth the money'

Tour
St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures (Skip The Line Guided Tour)

Pricey, but absolutely worth it. You get to SIT in the middle of the church (along with tour bus groups) and really take in the mosaics, while everyone else is shuffling through the constantly-moving line. Also, you get very close to some of the oldest mosaics (newly restored to their full glory), in the Bapistry, which is too small for even the organized tour groups to visit -- very special.

Our guide was very knowledgable, friendly and humerous. It was a fascinating tour, we learned a lot more than if we had visited alone. It was great to be in a small group, avoiding the endless queues, and visiting areas that we wouldn't normally have seen

St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures (Skip The Line Guided Tour)

This tour was outstanding. Tour guide spoke clearly in her English as a second language and the information was historical, well presented and very informational. Our group was small consisting of only 8 people. Very worth the while to not have to wait in the extremely long lines. Not one moment wasted. Highly recommend this tour.

'Excellent value'

Tour
St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures (Skip The Line Guided Tour)

Visiting St Marks was amazing and the guide was great. Originally read within guidebook that if you pre-book 48hrs in advance - guide was free but we paid €20 each. Although on day was glad when we saw both booking ticket queue and entrance queue. Suddenly an extra €10 was worth it. Francesca our guide was fantastic and we saw parts of the Basicilca that the ordinary public did not see.

Dear GE193,

thank you for your kind review! However it is not clear to us where you read that the tour is free of charge if you book it 48 hours in advance… We can assure you that this information is not true! We would very much appreciate if you could send us further details about this at info@insidecom.it.

'Good back stage tour'

Tour
St. Mark's Cathedral and its Treasures (Skip The Line Guided Tour)

The best part of this tour was the ability to see the restricted areas not available to the general public. The tour guide's English was difficult to understand, however. Also, I would have liked more in depth information.

Reply by venetoinside.com Staff

Dear Matt,

thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you had difficulties in understanding the guide, in fact she has just finished her training with a senior guide and she is getting more and more positive feedback by foreign people participating in the tour, which means she is improving her English... We hope you are sympathetic about this! As for your comment concerning the information, our guides try to use the time at their disposal as best as they can… As you can see from a quick look at the tour's reviews on this page, in fact the tour is generally much appreciated by participants. We regret this was not your case!
