Verona boasts many relics from the Roman time, the most famous of which is certainly the Arena ... But also the Roman Theatre, some of the squares and streets of the capital were built in this distant era: during our bike tour of Verona you will admire Roman Verona and the extraordinary testimony of later centuries. During the Middle Ages the Lordship of the Scaligeri family was able to reshape the face of the city, enriching it with buildings such as the Castelvecchio; and the Scaliger bridge; the dominant rule of Venice is apparent in the elegant aristocratic homes and in some religious buildings, while the Hapsburg government bequeathed to Verona the monumental cemetery and some military facilities. The small number of participants during the Verona, Italy bike tour (maximum 12 people) includes both the best known sites and some less famous ones making this original tour of Verona one of the most complete bike tour of Verona!
Places universally known such as the Arena di Verona, Juliet's balcony, the main shopping streets, Piazza delle Erbe but also lesser-known areas by bicycle in Verona, Italy where you will experience the daily atmosphere of the city taking advantage of the tranquillity that pervades the less frequented places of the old town: the views along the Adige River, the Arsenal of Verona, the terrace of Castel San Pietro, and the less crowded alleys. Visiting Verona by bicycle hire will prove an unforgettable experience!
Among the places included in our bike tour in Verona two jewels still not very well known which deserve further acknowledgement: the Austrian Arsenal and Castel San Pietro.
The Franz Joseph Arsenal was built in the mid 1800s, under Austrian rule, when Verona became one of the Quadrilateral cities. Tied to Castelvecchio via the Scaliger Bridge, the Austrian Arsenal in Verona is an area of more than 60,000 square meters and recalls the features of a medieval castle. Unlike other military architecture of this period, the Arsenal has an architectural structure in the Romanesque Revival style, in line with that of the nearby castle of Castelvecchio and the Romanesque style is dominant throughout the city. Such uniformity of style, wanted by the Austrians, is also underlined by the colours used in the facade of the building, following the tradition of Verona. The layout of the fortress takes up that of the Arsenal of Vienna, with nine bodies divided functionally to host stores, labs and warehouses, surrounded by greenery.
Built on top of the St Pietro hills on the remains of the former Visconti manor, St Pietro Castle is another testimony of the Austrian period. Built between 1852 and 1856 using typical materials of buildings in Verona, such as stones, brick, and tuff, these majestic military barracks offer a clear reference to the medieval architectural models and, despite the impressiveness of the structure, are perfectly integrated with the environment that surrounds them. St Pietro Castle is only open from the outside but the beautiful views that can be enjoyed from the top of the hill are well worth the short climb!
