Palazzo Mocenigo di San Stae owes its name to one of the most important and prestigious families from the ancient Venetian nobility, the Mocenigos, who lived there from the beginning of 16th century to the mid 19th century. After a careful restoration, and since 1985 it now houses a museum, the Centre for the History of Textiles and Costumes in Venice and an extensive library with over 13,000 figurines dating from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
The enlargement in 2013 has doubled the exhibition space of the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice integrating the works on display with others originating from the vast deposits of the Civic Museums. A section of the new rooms has been dedicated to a new guided tour which is unique in Europe: the perfume museum of Venice.
The preparation of the Fashion Museum of Venice aims to bring to life the everyday life and the lifestyle of the nobility of Venice, between the 17th and 18th centuries, with a focus on fashion: clothes and accessories on display - from the Mocenigo Palazzo - Venice collection and the Centre for Studies of the History of Textiles and Costumes - are made of textured fabrics, often decorated with embroidery and lace, and clearly document the ability of a large group of artisans (weavers, tailors, lace-makers, embroiderers, etc.) that contributed to the creation of elegance and refined luxury for which the Venetians were famous. In the section dedicated to perfumes, sensory experiences and multimedia tools will lead you to the discovery of ancient fragrances and soaps invented in Venice centuries ago. In all the rooms of Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice – the Fashion Museum, Venice and Perfume Museum, Venice - you can admire paintings, mostly dating back to the 18th century, which give an idea of what a Venetian noble palace looked like during the Serenissima.
Summary of the exhibition at Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice
First floor: the start is in the portego which displays various paintings, related to the Mocenigo family or from other collections in the city.
From room 1 to room 12, the exhibition is dedicated to costumes and fabrics, with examples dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries, among which we highlight the 18th century clothes called andrienne in Venice andriè, characterized by a monumental line, and a long train coming down from the shoulders; the large collection of waistcoats exhibiting more than fifty examples - and precious silk fabrics (made in the XVI - XVII centuries). In addition to the typical textiles, the halls of the Fashion Museum in Venice accommodate several paintings related to the Mocenigo family or events of their illustrious history; furniture from the 1700s, exquisite Murano glass and Burano needle lace; Chinese porcelain that comes from the Treasures of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco; and objects that were used daily.
The rooms 13 - 14 - 15 - 16 - 17 - 18 - 19 are devoted to the ancient production of perfumes in Venice. Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice, Italy shows fragrances, raw materials and tools... from a video that explains the important role of Venice in the history of perfume to the reconstruction of a 16th century workshop and an ‘olfactory’ exhibit that displays the Journey of Spices from centuries ago. Walking through the magnificent halls of Palazzo Mocenigo, Venice the scents will take you on a perceptive and sensory journey sending you unique emotions. Not forgetting the exceptional collection of jars and small perfume bottles from the German company Drom - which includes artefacts from the Middle Ages to the present day - and the fragrance stations: the scents of the Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo will give you the opportunity to experience the so-called olfactory families (classification of perfumes on the basis of the elements that compose them) and where the different scents originate from.
