Exhibitions 2018 at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana
- 'Cows by the Water', Albert Oehlen at Palazzo Grassi
After having been the protagonist of important exhibitions all over the world, Albert Oehlen brings his largest monographic show to date in Venice.
The exhibition, that presents over 80 works and an arrangement echoing the artist's own style, may be considered as a metaphor of Oehlen's working method where blending, improvisation, repetition and harmony of sounds become pictorial gestures.
- ‘Dancing with Myself’ at Punta della Dogana
By a wide range of artistic expressions and practices, such as photographs, paintings, sculptures, videos and installations belonging to different cultures and experiences, this exhibition aims to analyse the role of the artist and the primordial importance of self-representation starting from the '70s up to the present day.
The exhibition presents over 100 works from the Pinault Collection and a selection from the Folkwang Museum in Essen.
We suggest you to have a look at our dedicated page event for more information about the exhibitions at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana.
The exhibition venues
- Palazzo Grassi Venice museum
Famous for being the last patrician palace to be built along the Grand Canal before the fall of the Venetian Republic, Palazzo Grassi is undoubtedly one of the most famous buildings in Venice. Its fame also stems from the fascinating exhibitions hosted in recent decades!
Built between 1748 and 1772 by the architect Giorgio Massari, the building contains paintings by famous artists such as Michelangelo Morlaiter and Francesco Zanchi (main staircase) and Giambattista Canal and Christian Griepenkerl (ceilings).
Since the mid-nineteenth century, when the family Grassi put it up for sale, the building has had several owners until 1951 when it became the International Centre of Arts and Costume. After being purchased by Fiat in 1983, Palazzo Grassi was turned into an exhibition venue by the Milanese architect Gae Aulenti. In 2005 the building was then bought by the great art collector François Pinault, who entrusted its total renovation to the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Palazzo Grassi was reopened to the public in April 2006 and since then has been hosting temporary exhibitions of great international appeal, most of which are intended to present to the public François Pinault’s beautiful and vast collection of contemporary and modern art.
- Punta della Dogana museum
Originally the building of the Dogana da Mar (the old customs building) Sea Customs – which was moved from the Arsenal to the westernmost point of Dorsoduro during the fifteenth century, due to the growth of the commercial activities of the Venice Republic - Punta della Dogana is now one of the venues of the Pinault Foundation.
The structure that we see today was completed in 1682, only a few years before the neighbouring Basilica della Salute. The architect Giuseppe Benoni, who designed the seventeenth-century building, wanted to complete his work with a sculpture that soon became the symbol of the building: two statues of Atlas supporting a gilt bronze sphere depicting the world, above which stands Fortuna, a pivoting statue that indicates the wind direction and at the same time the inconsistency of good fortune itself. The use of the building for customs continued until 1980... After a 20 year-long period of neglect, the Venice City Council launched a tender to transform the venues of the ancient Dogana da Mar into a contemporary art centre. In 2007, the Pinault Foundation was awarded the works, which were promptly entrusted to Tadao Ando. After 14 months, in June 2009, the Punta della Dogana Contemporary Art Centre in Venice opened to the public as a venue for temporary exhibitions.

We enjoyed the city in it`s totality.
Die Stadt ist ein Kunstwerk. The city is an artwork.
Wir hatten zu wenig Zeit. Not enough time.

We enjoyed both parts of the exhibition in part because when we went neither place was too busy. The switch between Real and 'Fake' exhibits was fascinating and had us discussing the concept for the rest of the week. Some items we really thought excellent while others were highly original. Well worth seeing but I consider the key word is Unbelievable.
The film set the scene very well.
Could have done with a film at the other site.
