4) WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT VILLA DEI VESCOVI

Villa dei Vescovi in Luvigliano di Torreglia is located in the heart of the Colli Euganei. Designed in the early 16th century by Venetian Alvise Cornaro at the behest of Francesco Pisani, bishop of Padua, it is an example of Renaissance elegance blended with Roman classicism. The arched loggias and the gardens will make feel at one with the relaxing and calming beauty of the nature around.

The interior is highly ornated: on the main floor you will admire some of the splendid frescoes by the Flemish painter Lambert Sustris in 1542-1543. Unfortunately, many of the evocative decorations depicting rural landscapes and mythological figures have been lost throughout the many renovations.

Used during the Second World War as a shelter for displaced people and later as a seat for the Curia's training activities and spiritual retreats, in 1962 the villa was purchased by MP Vittorio Olcese who lived there until his death in 1992.

In memory of him and to respect his wishes, the heirs donated it to FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) in 2005. In 2011, after extensive restoration works, Villa dei Vescovi finally opened its doors to the public.

'Strada del Vino'

Inside the Villa, there are two apartments for guests, whilst, in the old buildings located near the entrance, you can find the bookshop and the 'Strada del Vino e Colli Euganei' wine shop.

To make your visit even more enjoyable, we encourage you to treat yourself to a glass of local wine. You will taste a unique wine expressing all the characteristics of the Colli Euganei: the unique microclimate, the volcanic soil and the marly and sometimes dry geology of the rock formations contribute to a truly peculiar wine, which represents the essence of this fertile area.
