Lying a short distance from Jesolo, Eraclea Mare is an ideal spot for family holidays, offering every type of accommodation (hotels, camping, holiday villas) situated in the heart of the pine forests, amidst golden sand dunes enriched with dense greenery and tamarisk trees.
The town has had a widely varied history, alternating between glory and oblivion until the large-scale renovation works which assured the future of the area. Its ancient splendours arose again in the 7th century, when the island of Melidissa became a refuge for the inhabitants of Oderzo fleeing from the Longobard king Rotari. Here they founded a new city named Eraclea after the Eastern Emperor Eraclio. Passing under the jurisdiction of the Doge, the citizens enjoyed a period of prestige until abandoning it in the 9th century.
Today, thanks to its natural harmony, the rightful pride of the whole region, Eraclea is a sunny and joyful area dedicated to agriculture which has found its proper vocation in Eraclea Mare as a beach resort, exploiting its natural setting on the Adriatic to the full.
The town is also a great horseriding centre, organising rides along the estuary of the river Piave and the outlying lagoon area, which also contains the nature reserve 'Del Mort' where you can enjoy excellent birdwatching. But however you choose to experience it, you are always immersed in its glorious natural beauty.
Not to say it is without the enticements of town life: the centre is full of shops, pizzerias, restaurants, and ice-cream parlours. In addition the town also offers many cultural possibilities, with art exhibitions and traditional events, as well as the vibrant nightlife, with bars, discos, funfairs and other attractions. The firework display on the August bank holiday is famous throughout the region.
