Coming of Age

From 28 June 2008 to 12 October 2008

American art from 1850 to 1950In the course of the hundred years from 1850 al 1950, the art and culture of America came of age, growing from provincialism to an international standard and moving from realism to an abstract representation of universal themes. Coming of Age explores the long and complicated processes of this maturation during this formative century of American art. The selection of works from the Addison Gallery offers an exhaustive overview of the main developments in a period which saw the rise of modernism and the dramatic transformation within the physical and social world. Organised by William Agee, Professor of Art History at Hunter College, New York, and Susan Faxon, Associate Director and Curator of the Addison Gallery.
