Coppa Oro delle Dolomiti in Cortina d'Ampezzo
Launch of the legendary race with the most beautiful classic cars
From 23 July 2015 to 26 July 2015
In the magical setting of the Dolomites one of the most anticipated events in Cortina returns, the Coppa Oro of the Dolomiti 2015! From 23 to 26 July the legendary race of vintage cars will take place combining, as always, the great passion for engines with the charm of the landscape, the history and tradition of the Dolomites.
This Classic car race in Italy, the Coppa d'Oro of the Dolomiti now in its 54th edition, has become a Cortina top event. Thousands of enthusiasts annually attend the event coming from all over the world.
The Cortina rally can only include classic cars registered before 1961. The organizers, will, after careful selection, decide which of these will actually take part in the Coppa Oro delle Dolomiti. The very challenging course winds through a breathtaking landscape: steep vertical walls, natural sculptures imprinted on the peaks and the incomparable rosy colours that contrast with the blue sky have allowed the Dolomites to be considered by UNESCO in 2009 as a World Natural Heritage Site.
The Coppa Oro delle Dolomiti began in 1947 at the behest of the then President of the Automobile Club of Belluno - Ferruccio Gidoni. It was immediately recognised as a huge success so much so that the first editions in one of the greatest drivers of all time: Tazio Nuvolari participated in the Cortina rally.
The 10th edition of the historic vintage car race Italy (1947-1956) witnessed a challenge by established pilots of the largest car manufacturers and non-professional drivers and ready to do anything to win the competition. The first races of the Coppa d'Oro Dolomiti Cortina involved a distance of approximately 300 km with the start and finish in Cortina d'Ampezzo - which has always been considered the queen of the Dolomites, passing through the charming Falzarego Pass, Agordo, Arabba, the Passo Pordoi Pass, the Val di Fassa, Passo Rolle, Fiera di Primiero and San Martino di Castrozza, Feltre, Belluno, Longarone, the characteristic Pieve di Cadore, Auronzo, Misurina with its beautiful lake and Cimabanche Pass.
The rules of this famous car race in Italy was that victory was assigned to the car which crossed the finish line in Cortina d'Ampezzo first. To achieve their goal, often the drivers took part in crazy challenges at full speed through the narrow mountain roads, making the race very dangerous.
In subsequent years, however, the rules changed: following the terrible accident which involved Guidizzolo in 1957 during the course of the Mille Miglia, speed races on the road were abolished. Since then, the vintage car race in Italy is won by those who reach the highest score based on the time taken for each stage, taking into account any penalty points.
The route of the Coppa d'Oro Dolomiti changes each year, with the aim of enhancing the whole area without affecting the beauty of the scenery. The beautiful natural backdrop of the Dolomites and the charm of vintage cars make the competition one of the most popular historic international motor races.
The Coppa d'Oro Dolomiti 2015 has in store some interesting news: the route of 509 km crosses 13 mountain passes and includes 45 time trials. It will be in two stages, one during the day plus another during the night, which will take place at the end of the first day of competition.
The historic car race, Italy will begin on 23 July with technical testing, but the actual competition gets underway on Friday 24 July when the cars leave from Corso Italia in Cortina d'Ampezzo and, after having made stops in Sappada, it will be back in the beautiful Queen of the Dolomites.
The Cortina d'Ampezzo events will start from the same place in the evening, the night race of the Coppa d'Oro Dolomiti: the historic cars will take about 80 km to reach Armentarola where they will enjoy a well-deserved break before leaving again. After passingPasso Falzarego, Campolongo and Valparola, the teams will return to Cortina, where they will enjoy an amazing night view of the city lit up in celebration.
The program of the Coppa d'Oro Dolomiti will continue on Saturday 25 July with the second day of the competition: the route starts and finishes in Cortina, includes a stop in the quaint town of Brunico and a closely watched mid test on the Passo Giau, at over 2,000 metres of altitude.
