69th Cycle of Classic Plays
'Conversations' at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza
From 13 September 2016 to 09 October 2016
'Conversations' is the title of the 69th Ciclo di Spettacoli Classici at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza: the 2016 program consists of 12 performances from 13th September to 9th October… It invites artists to try and establish a dialogue with the surrounding space.
The first new element of classic plays at the Olympic Theatre in Vicenza in 2016 concerns the artistic curator. After the editions of Eimuntas Nekrošius and Emma Dante, the role passes on to Franco Laera, not a director but a 'curator', who fulfil the task of renewing the relationship between the performance areas and the artists. In addition to the Olympic Theatre, the undisputed stage of classic shows, some events will take place in the Palladian Basilica, clear signal from the organizers of the will to furtherly engage the city of Vicenza in this event.
The artistic direction of Laera will open the doors to a new era of classic shows at the Olympic Theatre in Vicenza, hoping for a renewal of the old formats without compromising the quality standard achieved in present day. The great national and international artists who will appear at the 69th Ciclo di Spettacoli Classici for one of the 2016 events at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza are called to deal with the prevailing classical style of Vicenza and create a dialogue with the surrounding places, the art and the public.
A new season at the Olympic theatre, Vicenza: the events in 2016 wish to establish a dynamic relationship between the different forms of artistic expression, namely 'conversations', between artists and their subjective conception of the artistic production.
The Teatro Olimpico classics in 2016 becomes a festival of performing arts where every show will take place in the most appropriate place. At the Olympic Theatre by Palladio, a series of events will take place: these events have to be able to create a symphonic unity with the structure, which will fully take on its role as 'co-star' of the classic plays. In addition to the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, the program for 2016 will also involve other structures, above all the splendid Palladian Basilica that is going to be used in full respect of its spaces and the imposing volume for innovative scenic experiments involving dance and theatre.
The opening of the Vicenza theatre schedule 2016 is entrusted to a leading exponent of this 'polymorphic' view of drama: the American director Robert Wilson will present a screening of his 'Hamlet: a monologue' at the Palladian Basilica. Next appointments at the Teatro Olimpico, classics 2016 are 'Killing Desdemona' and 'Before Break', both of them performed by the Compagnia Balletto Civile led by Michela Lucenti. 'The Complete deaths', the exhilarant performance of physical comedy by Tim Crouch with the English group The Spymonkey, and 'I, Malvolio', an original interpretation of an episode of the Twelfth Night directed by Tim Crouch are scheduled at the Palladian Basilica. The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza will return later as the location for the screening of the great Russian film director Aleksandr Sokurov. In 'Go. Go. Go.' Sokurov will tackle the only play written by the Nobel prize winner Joseph Brodsky, and with his other poems, for the twentieth anniversary of the death of the great Russian poet. Great expectations for the new version of 'Delphi Cantata' by Moni Ovadia and Studio Azzurro, a famous show of the early 90s re-created ad hoc for the Olympic Theatre.
The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, program for 2016 will give space to some groups and artists that embody the theatrical and artistic activities of the surrounding territory: Anagoor will present 'Socrate il sopravvissuto' at the Astra theatre; Teatro del Lemming will present 'W.
S. Tempest'; Patrizia Zanco with her new 'Macbeth?'; Naturalis Labor, a group from Vicenza, with 'Lovers'.
Not to be missed in the programming of the 69th Ciclo di Spettacoli Classici at the Teatro Olimpico are also 'Galileo: l'ordine dell'occhio nel cielo' and the Japanese Company Nō Sakurama-kai. The first show will merge the melodies composed by Vincenzo and Michelangelo Galilei, played by the Accademia d'Arcadia with vintage instruments, and the digital images of the filmmaker Francesco Sortino. The Japanese Company Nō Sakurama-kai will remember the visit of the ambassadors of the Rising Sun in Vicenza in 1585 on a captivating show created specifically for the Olympic theatre.

In the poetic text by Ritsos, an elderly guardian of Delphi archaeological ruins talks about the lack of sensitivity of the tourists who visit the site ... Moni Ovadia and Studio Azzurro make the guardian's voice resound among the marbles of the Olympic Theatre to evoke the grandeur of the past compared with the banality of the present.
