2011 Historic Regatta
11 September 2011
On the first Sunday of September, as is the case every year, the city of Venice will give its guests the possibility to step back in time and observe life in the past. The Historic Regatta is, in fact, one of the liveliest events that can be experienced in the lagoon city, amongst the sportiest and most characteristic gatherings organized throughout the year. More than one hundred colourful and 16th century-like boats will travel along the canals re-enacting sport and folks competitions of the past times amidst an atmosphere of street partying.
Venice knows how to preserve its own traditions. The event has, in fact, been celebrated since the year 1500, when the authorities decided to support rowing activities in the effort to keep people occupied and train squads for the protection of the city.
The climax of the regatta will be the passage of the boats along the Canal Grande, a multitude of rowing boats steered by sailors and rowers dressed in traditional garments, who will challenge one another during a fantastic rowing race to elect the hatchet champions of the city, a title given the winners of the Regatta.
The Historic Regatta is once again a unique opportunity to witness the most spectacular time in the history of Venice. For the best experience, we recommend you book your accommodation early in the city due to the high number of tourists attending the event.
