Life is Theatre
2012 Venice Carnival
From 04 February 2012 to 21 February 2012
A pivotal and not to be missed event of the Italian artistic scene, the 2012 Venice Carnival will be a celebration of the real essence of the Carnival, a reminiscence of the centuries old life metaphor that masks have been symbolizing since the beginning of the theatre tradition of Venice and that has never been matched throughout history or across the world.
“Masquerading is the essence of Carnival and theatre is the representation of life comedy and of its numerous characters. Each individual represents through their own life a variety of roles and Carnival can magically epitomize them”, says Davide Rampello, this year's Carnival artistic director.
The event will open at the weekend of 4th and 5th February and will resume on the 11th until 21st of February. On top of the traditional fixtures the 'Flight of the Angel' and the best masked costume contest, it will be possible to enter an unforgettable walking theatre show called “The secrets of Venice”, which will be staged for the first time on the day of the Carnival opening (Saturday 4th February) with repeats every day from Saturday 11th through Tuesday 21st February.
The itinerary - departing in St Mark's Square and held in Italian, English and French - derives inspiration from the past figures of the “lantern keepers”, who used to escort Venice noblemen to the theatre whilst entertaining them with humorous tales and anecdotes along the route.
