The Murano Glass Museum pays homage to Livio Seguso, the brilliant Murano master of contemporary glass, with a large retrospective entitled ‘Livio Seguso. In the beginning was the drop’, which will run until 28 February 2021.

Born in 1930, Livio Seguso, as a true Murano citizen, began his liaison with glass very early in his life, growing in an environment where glass and its production were the family’s 'daily bread'. He began his apprenticeship period, which he defines as essential, under Alfredo Barbini as a student and collaborator, dedicating himself mostly to 'a massello' sculpture. In 1959 he became master at Salviati & C. and ten years later he opened his glass workshop where he combined his entrepreneur interests with his sculpting activities, until his art received widespread recognition with a personal exhibition at Ca 'Pesaro in 1980.

In 1972 he participated in the 36th edition of the Venice Biennale, but his artistic work reached its pinnacle towards the end of the decade, when he abandoned the legacy of the Murano tradition to embrace only pure crystal with its transparent iridescence and ambiguity.

His works can thus manifest themselves in forms of absolute purity, becoming ‘images of light’ in which thoughts mix and confuse creating a series of dreamlike forms that only a material such as glass can generate: ‘Glass is a magical material, it doesn't just have three dimensions like marble or wood. It has an additional value, the fourth dimension, which I would call penetration because you can enter the glass, your gaze can scrutinize its innermost and mysterious part and it is only its transparency that gives you this possibility’.

But the search of the great artist never stopped and the glass matter in its essential forms enters into symbiosis with other materials and is bound to steel, marble and wood creating unique and utopian artistic expressions.

Livio Seguso's exhibition in Murano introduces the visitor to the exhibition with a highly evocative title: ‘In the beginning was the drop’. It is precisely from that simple drop of transparent glass that the great international artist began his journey of experimentation in the vast world of glass, abandoning the role of homo faber to become a true artist and art molder: from figurative language he passed gradually to the abstract, denying any chromatic temptation to devote himself to absolute transparency. The works themselves create ever-changing forms of light ...

The 2019-2021 Livio Seguso exhibition at the Glass Museum in Venice dedicates a magical journey around Seguso’s many works, which are the result of a lifetime’s research and passion. Here the visitor will be able to experience the personal and professional journey of the great master of Murano glass and relish the emotions that emerge from every single artistic creation, entering into communion with Livio Seguso’s genius and soul.

And while his works continue to be shown and amaze everybody, Livio Seguso, at the age of ninety, continues his work and research in his beloved Murano because, as he says, there is always some new barrier to overcome...
