Valentina: Crepax's heroine on display in Bassano del Grappa
The story of Valentina and her eclectic author Guido Crepax
From 01 December 2018 to 15 April 2019
From 1 December 2018 to 15 April 2019 the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa opens its doors to Valentina Rosselli, otherwise known simply as Valentina, the young and sensual woman born from the undisputed genius of Guido Crepax.
Valentina, one of the most famous characters of the great world of Italian comics, is also in possession of a real identity card! She was born on December 25, 1942, she’s 1.62 m tall and lives in Milan where she works as a photographer. Her unmistakable traits are her fair eyes and the Valentina-style bob cut. Crepax created Valentina’s beautiful and intriguing looks by taking inspiration from an icon of US cinema: the showgirl Luise Brooks: her sensual body full of erotism and the 20’s hairstyle impacted the imagination of the cartoonist so much that he decided to make those the main features of Valentina’s appearance.
'Valentina. A life with Crepax' at the Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa is a very original exhibition: unlike previous exhibitions dedicated to her, even recent ones – such as those in Milan and Rome - this exhibition traces the life of the oneiric figure of Valentina in parallel to Crepax's professional life and, transcending the comic strips, investigates the intimacy of these two co-protagonists.
Valentina appeared for the first time in 1965 in the magazine 'Linus' as one of the characters in the science fiction comic strip 'Neutron'. Since then, she conquered the hearts of men and women for being 'true' to herself and bestowed with strengths and weaknesses like a real person. She is a fragile but strong woman, determined, sensual and emotionally unstable, constantly encumbered with delirious thoughts. Through his comic strips, Crepax tells the troubled life of Valentina marked by anorexia, hallucinations and dreamlike episodes that are interspersed with daily troubles, which this incredible woman faces thanks to a dream world, where everything is allowed and nothing is impossible or forbidden... A normal woman therefore, who fights every day to find a place in the world and that today is proud of her seventy year- long fame.
The creative project of Crepax art exhibition at Bassano del Grappa on display at the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa was conceived by the three sons of the great designer to honor and remember the life and works of a man who marked the history of Italian comics! Guido Crepax was the first to make women protagonists, bringing a breath of fresh air into the traditional comics industry. Valentina is a striking example of this innovation, in addition to being the only character in the world of comics to have a psychology so complex and full of passions... With the passing of the years Valentina has aged just like her creator!
The Valentina by Crepax exhibition at Bassano del Grappa museum was conceived as an intriguing journey into the imaginary world of this great illustrator filtered by Valentina's humanly heroic figure. The first part of the exhibition 'Valentina. A life with Crepax' shows the works related to one of Crepax’s greatest passions: the creation of board games based on his passion for historical reconstruction. After this short section, we enter the heart of the exhibition on Valentina and Crepax at Bassano del Grappa museum while the last part focuses on the artistic evolution of Crepax and the video productions dedicated to him and his character. Thanks to an innovative video-art installation it will also be possible to admire the progressive coloring of the pages of the comic strips and the latest editorial project of the Crepax Archive: the new series with the most beautiful color stories created for the Repubblica newspaper.
