Vicenza Jazz 2009: The jazz that came in from the cold
The jazz that came in from the cold
From 08 May 2009 to 16 May 2009
Paraphrasing John Le Carr's famous title, the 15th edition of Vicenzas jazz festival alludes to the North European scene, one of the most prolific in recent years. From 8th to 16th May this historic city provides the stage for several Nordic musicians, including the Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, as well as Eivind Aarset and Hkon Kornstad, together with others coming in from the cold. Other guests will be of the calibre of John Zorn, Buena Vista Social Club, Tom Harrel, Jan Garbarek, Geri Allen and Italys own Stefano Bollani. All in all a complete picture of the current state of jazz, unanimously considered one of the highest art forms of the previous century, refined yet popular, elite in its demands for muscianship yet accessisble to all ears.
The festival will occupy bars, churches, museums and other cultural institutions as well as in the open-air, in squares and in the streets. An important main feature will be the Jazz Caf Trivellato (opposite Teatro Astra) which will host among others Tom Harrell, Bobby Watson, Mina Agossi, Ferenc Nemeth with Lionel Loueke, Michael Blake, Antonello Salis and Roberto Gatto.
The festival kicks off on Friday 8th April with Uri Caine opening for John Zorn at the Teatro Olimpico; Sunday 10th sees Garbarek at the Tempio di San Lorenzo. Accompanying the concert will be a gastronomic delight, in which ancient ties between the city and Garbareks home of Norway will be uncovered! Dave Holland will be appearing on 12th May, and the day after Stefano Bollini takes to the stage. In addition to concerts there will be the opportunity to meet the musicians in a series of events, as well as book presentations, seminars and an exhibition on the jazz theme, at the Basilica Palladiana (7 -24 May).
