What happened on April 14 in Venice

According to the Venetian Liturgical Calendar, the Saints of the Day are Martyrs Valerian and Tiburtius.

- April 14, 1848: Pier Fortunato Calvi is appointed by the Manin government 'Captain of Cadore' with the task of organizing the military defense against the Austrians: he will also create the Frankish Corps comprising young connoisseurs of the area with a badge displaying a spruce branch fixed with a tricolor cockade on the brim of the hat, inspiring the future 'Hunters of the Alps'.

- April 14, 1883: first performance in Italy, at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, of Wagner’s 'The Ring of the Nibelung'. The famous tetralogy, showcased on the evenings of 14, 15, 17 and 18 April, with a total of 18 hours of staging, is followed with keen interest by the Venetian public trying to comprehend the difficult world of Wagnerian music.
