What happened on April 16 in Venice
According to the Venetian Liturgical Calendar, the Saint of the Day is San Sidro (Saint Isidore Martyr).
The Doge goes to the Church of San Ziminian, in memory of Marin Faliero's conspiracy in 1354.
It is Palazzo Feast Day.
- April 16, 1849: Cardinal Jacopo Monico, Patriarch of Venice, announces in a Pastoral that the sacred image of the Most Holy Virgin Nicopeja will be exhibited on the main altar of St Mark’s Basilica for thirty consecutive days. The clergy and worshippers of every parish in the city will go in procession to honor the Virgin to implore the salvation of Venice besieged by Austria.
- April 16, 1877: the Società musicale Benedetto Marcello is established in Venice: the Liceo named after the great Venetian composer is founded as a private company based in the Da Ponte palace in Campo S. Maurizio, and later at Teatro La Fenice, and finally in the Pisani Palace in Campo S. Stefano, its present location.
- April 16, 1973: Law number 171 is passed, actions for the protection of Venice, the first "Special Law" for Venice.
