What happened on April 3 in Venice

According to the Venetian Liturgical Calendar, today is St. Pancras Bishop’s Day.

In 2021 it’s Holy Saturday.

Mass at Santa Croce degli Armeni for privilege and at the island of San Lazzaro.

- April 3, 1688: with unanimity voting, Francesco Morosini, a great man at arms both on Land and at Sea, is voted Doge on the first ballot, as Superintendent and then Captain General he had taken on the defense of Candia against the Turks until the forced surrender of the island; having entered Venice in the Holy League alongside the Pope, the Emperor and the King of Poland, he had taken over the supreme command of the Venetian armed forces. The triumphal victories culminating in the conquest of Morea gave him the incomparable privilege of being celebrated still alive with the nickname of Peloponnesian. At the time of his election, he is still in Greece in command of the troops and returns to Venice only two years later; due to the constant hardships endured in the war, his strong fiber is weakened and he remains ill for six years of his reigning.

- April 3, 2003: the Italian Government, through the Comitatone, authorizes the construction of the MOSE (MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), a gigantic work of hydraulic engineering, to defend Venice from floods higher than 110 cm, with a process that started in 1975, and subsequent experiments starting in 1988. With a series of mobile gates, the project seeks to curtail the tide entering the lagoon by blocking its three inlets (Lido, Malamocco, Chioggia). Environmentalists are against the work and over the years its cost spiraled, leading to a series of investigations for alleged tax fraud, bribes and meddling, creating havoc in the Municipality of Venice and in the Veneto Region.
