What happened on April 9 in Venice
According to the Venetian Liturgical Calendar, today is Sta. Mary of Clopas’ Day
- April 9, 1618: an anonymous letter informs the government of the coup organized by Spain with the complicity of the ambassadors of France and England to overthrow the Veneto government and take possession of the lands of San Marco. Secret agents had infiltrated the troops while the Count of Ossuna, Viceroy of Naples, was ready to attack Venice at the right moment. Leader of the conspiracy is the Marquis of Bedmar, the Spanish ambassador, who is immediately expelled, followed by a dozen public executions and incarcerations of foreigners, mainly French.
