- March 25, 421: the mythical date of the foundation at noon of Rivoalto, located at the ancient mouth of the River Brenta; Padua is said to have sent three notables with the title of consuls (Adalberto Falier, Tomaso Candiano, Cono Daulo) to rule the government. The story appears at the end of the 13th century in the Annales Veneti in the Metz library, but it is pure legend. Nevertheless, every year on March 25 the Doge and the Signoria go to St Mark’s Basilica to celebrate the founding of the city. The myth says that: On the day of the Annunciation, which fell on March 25, 421, the church of San Giacometo was erected by a certain Candioto (or Eutinoto), a Greek carpenter, as a vow for having been saved from a fire. The Lagoon certainly had human settlements prior to that date, but in this period a profound change was beginning in Europe, the Roman Empire was faltering under the blows of the barbarian populations that pressed from the East. Visigoths and Ostrogoths sacked the rich Roman cities on several occasions, pursued in turn by the people of the Huns, who were followed by the Lombards and later the Hungarians. The storm was starting and it is thanks to this series of upheavals that the pearl of the Adriatic, our VENICE, will rise from mud, water and salt, radiant as a dawn.
- March 25, 1305: consecration in Padua of the Scrovegni Chapel, built by Enrico Scrovegni on the ruins of a Roman amphitheater in atonement for the sins of his father Reginaldo, a usurer placed by Dante in hell; the walls and the vault are a masterpiece by Giotto, who seems to have been inspired in the description of Hell (like Dante himself) by the mosaic of the Last Judgment in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello, dating back to the year 1000.
- March 25, 1405: dedication of Rovigo and Polesine to the Venetian Serenissima Republic with a solemn and formal act.
- March 25, 1908: the Kaiser of Germany, William II, arrives with his family in the city, where he is welcomed by Vittorio Emanule III, who with a great parade of boats along the Grand Canal, escorts the imperial family to the Hohenzollern Court Yacht, from where they will disembark in complete hiding to visit Venice. Soon after the Triple Alliance will end and in 1915 the Kaiser became our enemy.
