What happened on March 3 in Venice
According to the Venetian Liturgical Calendar, today is St. Cunegundes Empress’ Day
- March 3, 1043: the monastery and church of S. Nicolò di Lido are handed over to the friars of S. Nicolò: the buildings were built at the expense of Doge Domenico I Contarini, the Patriarch of Grado, Orso Orseolo, and the bishop of Olivolo.
- March 3, 1792: N.H. Angelo Emo, the last great Sea Captain of the Republic, passes away in Malta. On 21 June 1784, the expedition against the Bey of Tunis, Amudà, sets off. The continuous raids of the Barbary pirates threaten the maritime routes, so that a fleet of five ships of the line and five frigates and a series of bombards transported on assembled rafts, designed by Emo himself, is deployed. After defeating the enemies at sea, Emo bombards the ports of Sfax, Tunis and Biserta protected by shallow waters, through the use of the rafts that he pushes down to the coast.
