What happened on May 16 in Venice

According to the Venetian Liturgical Calendar, the Saint of the Day is St. Boldo (St. Ubald Bishop) a church was dedicated to the Saint, today demolished except for half of the bell tower, in the San Polo district. He is the patron of the Art of Filacanevo.

Today is the day of the Marriage of the Sea, the Doge on the Bucentaur goes to Porto del Lido. It's Palace Feast Day.

 

- May 16, 1792: the Teatro La Fenice in Venice is inaugurated, built as a venture by a consortium made up of 'patricians, shopkeepers and the wealthy' who want to give Venice a theater that competes with the most famous in Italy. Having chosen the location in a central position, near St Mark’s Square, and after buying the land, a sum of 200 thousand ducats is allocated, reserving a prize of 300 zecchini for the best project. The competition was won by the Venetian architect Giannantonio Selva, under whose direction the works began in May 1790 and in just 18 months they were completed. The opening show is Alessandro Pepoli's play 'The games of Agrigento' with music by Giovanni Paisiello.

 

- May 16, 1797: General Bonaparte's French troops occupy Venice, which for the first time in its history is conquered by a foreign army.

 

- May 16, 1901: On the evening of May 16, once gathered in a room of the Restaurant Bauer run by Piero Foscari, some young people, mostly members who left the Canottieri Bucintoro, founded the new association. The name of 'FRANCESCO QUERINI' was unanimously chosen to commemorate the young Venetian officer of the Royal Navy, lost in the Arctic Ocean during the attempt by the Duke of Abruzzi to conquer the North Pole. Querini has in its fleet the 'Disdotona', the largest gondola ever, with 18 rowers.

 

- May 16, 1966: the City Council of Venice, with unanimous vote, dedicates the Piazzetta dei Leoncini in St Mark’s to Pope John XXIII.
