  • Doge’s Palace
Thanks to his tenacious hard work, Tintoretto succeeded in obtaining a role among the painters who were called to decorate the halls of the palace which was the seat and symbol of the government of the Serenissima Republic. Unfortunately, all the works made between 1550s and 1560s were almost entirely destroyed in two terrible fires. Among the paintings by Tintoretto, only those in the ceiling of the square Atrium have survived. However, the artist and his workshop actively participated in the decoration of the building following the fires. Today, to follow the traces of Tintoretto at the Doge’s Palace, we suggest this itinerary: Atrio Quadruple, Sala delle Quattro Porte (the ceiling frescoes were made by Tintoretto, although they were almost completely repainted), Sala dell'Anticollegio (where you can admire the four allegories of the virtues of good government of the Republic), Sala del Collegio (with the four great devotional paintings of doges on the walls), Sala del Senato (with two other devotional paintings of doges and, in the ceiling, the famous Triumph of Venice as queen of the seas), Sala del Maggior Consiglio (with the famous and immense painting of Paradise, created by Tintoretto with his son Domenico, and on the ceiling the narration of the voluntary submission of the provinces to the Venetian dominion and four other episodes in the history of the city), Sala dello Scrutinio (Battle of Zara). The return of the Prodigal Son, which decorates the ceiling of Sala degli Inquisitori, is visible only by following the secret itineraries inside the Doge's Palace, for which it is necessary to purchase a particular ticket, not included in the standard itinerary of the entrance ticket to the Museums of St Mark’s Square.

San Polo and Santa Croce

  • Scuola Grande di San Rocco
Founded in the fifteenth century to fulfil the activities of worship and charity, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco was one of the largest lay brotherhoods in Venice. Tintoretto decorated the numerous rooms of the Scuola over 24 years: this is when he reached the highest peak in his artistic abilities. If you admire the Venetian painter’s works, this is a truly unmissable stop! His first work, the ceiling of Sala dell’Albergo with San Rocco in glory, is a proper gem: in 1565 the brotherhood welcomed Tintoretto among its members and thus began for the painter a long series of commissions. After completing the decoration of Sala dell’Albergo with the Crucifixion, the Ascent to Calvary, Christ in front of Pilate and Ecce Homo, he decorated the ceiling of the Sala Capitolare with episodes from the life of Moses and other stories from the Old Testament. He was then asked to complete the decoration of the entire Scuola, and he promised to deliver three paintings a year for the rest of his life... Thus he completed decorating the Sala Capitolare, with episodes from the life of Christ, and the Sala Terrena with stories of the life of Mary and events of the New Testament, such as the Massacre of the innocents, the Adoration of the Magi or the Flight into Egypt. In all his works, he takes much room for interpretation of the main themes using compositional freedom in a dynamic and innovative way: this was a real turning point compared to the traditional canons of the time.
