This new ‘Doge's Palace skip-the-line tour & Guided visit to St. Mark's Basilica Museum & Terrace’ will start from one of the most beautiful points of St. Mark’s Square: the Torre dei Mori, that overlooks the entrance to one of the main streets, Antica Merceria, and it’s characterized by a large astronomical clock, a masterpiece of engineering and technology from the late 15th century. Right here, in this beautiful historical setting, you will meet our expert guide that will engage you in a tour of great charm so you can learn the best of Venice in just two hours!
The Doge’s Palace will be the first destination of your journey (about 1 hour and 15 minutes) through the wonders of the historic center of Venice: an imposing building, unique in its kind for elegance and beauty, now home to one of the most prestigious museums in Venice, the Museo Civico di Palazzo Ducale.
Representative symbol of the Gothic-Venetian style, the Doge’s Palace, built presumably from the ninth century onwards, and gradually transformed over the centuries until it reached today’s elegant appearance, was the residence of the Doge and seat of the local magistrates until the fall of the Republic of Venice.
Through its sumptuous halls, you will immerse yourself in the splendor and power of the Serenissima, and discover the treasures kept inside… every room and every corner are keepers of extraordinary artistic masterpieces, pieces of furniture and treasures of inestimable value. Here you will discover the complicated political mechanisms that governed city life, the functions of each individual room, the palace intrigues and many other little secrets...
During the visit to the Doge’s Palace you will be able to admire up close all those masterpieces that have made this monument famous: the Giants' Staircase with the two marble statues by Sansovino depicting Mars and Neptune, the splendid Golden Staircase that leads to the constitutional halls, the largest canvas in the world, 'Il Paradiso’ (Paradise) by Jacopo Tintoretto and much more that you will discover by taking part in this tour!
The tour also includes a visit to the Bridge of Sighs and the New Prisons. The elegant suspended structure, owes its name to the doomed fate of the condemned who used to cross it: upon crossing the Bridge of Sighs, they relinquished freedom forever before being locked up in the dark rooms of the Prisons.
After the guided tour of the Doge’s Palace, the guide will accompany you to visit the Museum of Saint Mark’s Basilica (whose entrance ticket is included in our guided tour) housed on the first floor of the church. There, you will also enjoy the special access to the outdoor terrace, from which you can admire the homonymous square from a privileged position.
During this fascinating journey, which winds along the matronea, the former Banquet Hall and the rooms above the narthex, the guide will pause to tell the story of this wonderful church whose origins are tied to a truly incredible tale that, at times, appears legend. In these ancient rooms you will admire the magnificence of the mosaics and all those artistic masterpieces that constitute the great patrimony of the Basilica Marciana, and are evidence of the greatness of the Venetian civilization.
Of course, during your visit to St. Mark’s Museum, the original St. Mark’s Horses cannot go unnoticed. They once stood on the upper part of the church façade and they are the only example in ancient statue collections of an all-round four-horse sculpture that survived until today, and it probably dates back to the Age of Imperial Rome.
The tour will end in St. Mark’s Square with the explanation of the external facades of the sacred building, which are like a history book, able to tell all the events that have the St. Mark’s Basilica as their protagonist… will you be able to pick up the clues?
If you wish to linger at the Museum to admire again the splendid panorama of the Piazza from the Basilica’s Loggia or to see once more your favorite masterpieces, you may conclude the tour here as it will not be possible to access the Museum again once you leave.
