Visit the Arena di Verona Italy: a tour of one of the most wonderful monuments in the world... with skip-the-line service included in the ticket price!
The building, constructed by the end of the first century AD, owes its importance to being the third largest Roman amphitheatre in the world that even survived a devastating earthquake in the twelfth century. Thanks to regular restoration activities promoted since the past few centuries, it is also the best preserved ancient amphitheatre. Visit the Roman Arena Verona also means the chance to discover an example of Roman architecture dedicated to recreation that still retains most of its original splendour, when history was written in dust and blood.
During our guided visit to the Verona Arena you will find that its very name, ‘Arena’, means sand and derives from the material placed on the floor to absorb the blood of the fighters who challenged each other in every possible way to try and survive.
It was precisely in amphitheatres that Roman emperors used to entertain themselves watching the bloody battles between gladiators, but also between gladiators and wild beasts imported from the provinces of the empire to amuse the wealthy Roman citizens.
The building is designed to hold more than 20,000 people, a number equal to the entire population of Rome at the time, gathered between its mighty walls made of stone from Valpolicella, with endless red-pink shades. Its typically elliptical shape guaranteed a large capacity and an extremely wide central space (harena) which allowed games of all kinds to take place, such as the one between gladiators, using grandiose stage sets.
The harena was separated from the steps of regular width (cavea) with a high podium with protective nets required for the protection of the spectators, especially during hunting shows... Fighting between gladiators was not the only entertainment that took place in the impressive amphitheatre! Its ‘recreational activities' never seemed to be interrupted in ancient times, since rides and other shows, such as bull hunting, were still being held in the seventeenth century.
This and much more will be explained during our unmissable Verona Arena tour with skip-the-line access!
