You can take part in an interesting guided tour that will take you inside both St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, cradles of the temporal and spiritual power of the ancient Republic of Venice, and then discover the suggestive areas nestled between St Mark’s Square and the Rialto area... Our brilliant guide will get you completely absorbed in a fascinating afternoon tour to show you the best of Venice in just four hours!
Skip-the-line access to St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace are both included in the tour: you can access the two top visited buildings in Venice without having to waste precious time queuing!
The tour will begin inside the millenary walls of St Mark’s Basilica with a guided tour of its gilded interiors. Initially built to house the precious relics of San Marco, stolen by two merchants of Venice in Alexandria of Egypt, St Mark’s Basilica officially became a cathedral only in 1807, after centuries as the palatine church of the Doge’s Palace.
During your visit you will admire some of the countless treasures kept inside, such as the extraordinary mosaics and the famous Pala d'Oro, made with almost two thousand precious stones, gold and cloisonné enamels: a masterpiece of Byzantine art considered one of the most precious objects in the world!
After visiting the Basilica you will move to the Doge’s Palace, a true masterpiece of Venetian Gothic, now home to one of the most prestigious museums in Venice, the Museo Civico di Palazzo Ducale.
Built presumably from the ninth century onwards, and gradually transformed over the centuries until it reached today’s elegant appearance, the Doge’s Palace represented the power and grandeur of the Republic of Venice until its fall.
Inside the sumptuous halls of the Doge’s Palace in Venice you will immerse yourself in the splendor and power of the Serenissima, discovering the treasures inside... Extraordinary painting masterpieces, sophisticated furniture and countless historical and artistic treasures are hidden among the precious environments where the history of Venice was made for a long time.
In addition to the famous Scala dei Giganti, with the statues of Mars and Neptune carved by Sansovino, the famous Scala d'Oro and the elegant environments that made Venice’s history, the tour also includes a visit to the Bridge of Sighs, the elegant structure suspended between the Doge's Palace and the New Prisons which owes its name to the tragic destiny of the condemned men who crossed it: crossing the Bridge of Sighs meant abandoning their freedom before being imprisoned in the New Prisons.
After the guided tour of the Doge’s Palace, your guide will stop in St Mark’s Square to share some facts on the main buildings facing it; the tour will then continue towards Campo Santa Maria Formosa where, surrounded by beautiful buildings, you can listen to the history and hear anecdotes about this famous place and the splendid church bearing the same name.
Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, with the majestic equestrian monument dedicated to Bartolomeo Colleoni del Verrocchio, the church and the Scuole di Carità are the next stage: here too the guide will share interesting explanations on the places you will encounter.
After visiting the place where Marco Polo's house stood in Venice and admiring the splendid facade of Teatro Malibran, the tour will end near the Rialto Bridge, in Campo San Bartolomeo.
