The Antico Martini restaurant
Located near the famous Teatro La Fenice, the Antico Martini restaurant offers refined elegance and the warm welcome of those who have made the passion for food a real reason for living. It offers a refined menu, the result of a skillful fusion of tradition and innovation.
In the distant 1720, one of the historic cafés of Venice was founded in San Fantin square. At that time the city was a blast of music and theaters... La Fenice, the theater whose name is linked to that of Venice, was opened precisely in this square in 1792. It was also here that, in 1812, Venice University was founded: the Café became the favorite meeting point for theater-goers, artists and numerous intellectuals. In 1863 the restaurant changed ownership and became to be known by everybody as 'Caffè Martini': its fame grew exponentially thanks to the passion of its director Paolo Montico.
In 1909, under the management of Andrea Maso, two hundred kilos of coffee were consumed every month! The restaurant continues to provide refreshments for La Fenice and also offers an excellent lunch menu.
1922 is a turning point: after being closed - for the first time in its history - due to war restrictions, it was taken over by the Chianti Paganelli supplier and transformed into a luxurious restaurant and reopened with the name of 'Antico Martini'.
In the '30s Antico Martini also became a piano bar ... Thanks to the Biennale, music festivals and the cinema festival, Venice became the center of showbiz tourism... The place was frequented by big names such as Wolf Ferrari and Toscanini, Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles, Count Volpi and Giovanni Stucky!
During the Second World War Antico Martini was requisitioned and became a place of entertainment for the US troops... The piano brought here at the time by the American soldiers is still in the café’s room!
In the fifties Antico Martini became one of the most popular restaurants in Venice... from Igor Stravinsky to Samuel Berstein, Jean Cocteau and Giuseppe Ungaretti and Eugenio Montale, Laurence Olivier to Peggy Guggenhaim and many other celebrities sit at the tables of this historic Venetian restaurant, recommended by the most famous gastronomic guides of the time!
Today the restaurant magnifies the spirit of the historic cafés and the Serenissima Republic in all its facets, from the atmosphere to the flavors, from the settings to the music, everything is designed to give you a special evening between dream and reality!
Antico Martini is one of the members of the Association of Historical Cafés of Italy since its foundation.
