Our tour of Rialto, San Polo and Frari Church is aimed at those wishing to discover the less touristic and more authentic side of Venice to be found in the everyday life of some of the residential areas that are still rarely approached by tourists! A visit that combines past and present to get to know Venice away from the usual tourist routes.
Our visit to San Polo, Venice, Italy, begins a few steps from the famous Rialto Bridge ... The guide will lead you through areas of the city centre – some famous others instead less known – and entertain you with historical explanations and amusing anecdotes linked to the places you will see during the walk.
You will cross the Rialto Bridge to reach the San Polo district ... Step after step, the bridge will reveal all of its magic to you, up to its top from where sweeping views of the Grand Canal will award you with glimpses of unmatched beauty.
The area around the famous bridge is the oldest part of the city. It has always had a strictly commercial purpose and, even if the leading role it played as the trading nerve centre of the Serenissima has gradually been lost over the centuries, fish and fruit and vegetable markets are still held every day at the foot of the bridge.
Before or after the tour, take the opportunity to have a wander around the market stalls. In addition to enjoying an impressive view of the Grand Canal, you will see for yourself how the thousand-year long history of this trading area continues to the present day.
Moving away from the hustle and bustle near Venice’s Grand Canal, there will be many unusual Venice places to see in the labyrinth-like narrow streets and small squares in the heart of San Polo ... Strolling around you will come across coffee bars and room-size shops, many of which are handed down from generation to generation.
San Polo is the smallest district in Venice, as well as one of the oldest. It is a lively area, which has managed to maintain its own identity and atmosphere thanks to the fact that it is not included in the routes chosen by tourists to reach the St Mark’s area.
A guided tour of San Polo district, Venice, cannot exclude a visit to the Frari Basilica of Venice, one of the district’s most noteworthy monuments for the splendour of the works of art housed inside it.
Located in the square of the same name, it is Venice’s largest church, erected by the Franciscan Monastic Convent Friars between the 12th and 14th century, and then rebuilt in the 14th century in Gothic-Franciscan style.
Inside it, there are three naves and seven apsidal chapels on a cross floor plan. In addition to the tombs of various figures linked to Venice such as Claudio Monteverdi and Titian, who died in Venice during the 16th century plague, it houses numerous works of art of great value.
After a quick view from the outside, the guided tour of Frari Venice Church will continue inside - Frari Church Venice admission is included in the cost of the tour - to admire its masterpieces, among which it is worth mentioning Ca' Pesaro’s Madonna and Titian’s Assunta, Madonna with Child and Saints by Giovanni Bellini, St Mark and Saints by Bartolomeo Vivarini and the Martyrdom of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria by Palma il Giovane.
The guided tour of Frari Venice Church will wrap up the tour.
